History / Biographical
The Widener Family was a prominent Philadelphia family who made major contributions to cultural and educational institutions in the area. Peter A. B. Widener (1834-1915) started the family dynasty in the meat business and street railways. His son, George Dunton Widener (1889-1912) was killed when the Titanic sank in 1912. Peter A. B. Widener's grandson, Harry Elkins Widener (1890-1912; son of George Dunton Widener) was also lost when the Titanic went down. Eleanor Widener Dixon was the sister of Harry Elkins Widener and the mother of Fitz Eugene Dixon, Jr, former President of the Board of Trustees of Widener University. The Widener Library at Harvard University was named after Harry Elkins Widener. For Widener Family History, see also a book in the archives collection entitled "Without Drums" written by P.A.B. History of the PMA vs. Princeton controversy - PMA played Princeton in 1887 and legand has it that it was at this time that PMA originated the practice of calling players by number instead of by name. While it was established that there was a game between PMA and Princeton, there remains no historical evidence to show PMA originated the calling by numbers and that controversy has never been fully resolved.
