History of the PMA vs. Princeton controversy - PMA played Princeton in 1887 and legand has it that it was at this time that PMA originated the practice of calling players by number instead of by name. While it was established that there was a game between PMA and Princeton, there remains no historical evidence to show PMA originated the calling by numbers and that controversy has never been fully resolved.
